Just like the original A386 from 1969, the Chronomaster Manufacture Edition is equipped with the venerable El Primero calibre, the world's first automatic high-frequency chronograph movement. Within it were a number of dials, including a previously unknown iteration of the A386's iconic tri-color dial, using three different shades of blue. During the 50th anniversary of the El primero, a small box was found in the secret attic where Charles Vermot had hid the tools and plans needed to produce the El Primero calibre. The Chronomaster Manufacture Edition is inspired by a prototype dial for the A386 from 1969, which was never produced - until now. Housed in a steel case that mimics the proportions and finishes of the A386 from 1969, the signature tri-color dial is inspired by a previously unknown prototype with three shades of blue for the chronograph counters. “CHRONOMASTER Revival A386 Manufacture Editionĭial inspired by vintage prototypes never released and found in the Attic of the Manufacture Exclusive Manufacture Edition Original 1969 case with 38 mm diameter Automatic El Primero column-wheel chronographįor its first Manufacture Edition, exclusively available on our online store and to those who visit the Manufacture in Le Locle, Zenith is revisiting a secret part of the El Primero story and the first watches that were equipped with it. Listed below is the information provided by Zenith. We at Watch Noble are excited about the release and believe it will sell well. Zenith keeps digging through the infamous attic at their headquarters finding new/old treasures. This has to be one of the most soothing to the eye color combo dials I have seen for a while. Models: Chronomaster Revival Manufacture EditionĬase/Dial: 38mm diameter x 12.Zenith releases the new shades of blue dial for the reference A386 model that was only in precious metals before now available in stainless steel. It’s a lovely version of an iconic watch and that’s more than enough. While the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition is as faithful a re-issue as is possible, it’s also, somewhat counterintuitively, a brand new watch, meaning I’m not sure quite where it lands: archival revival or simply retro-inspired.

The El Primero column-wheel chronograph has been used widely across the watch world since inception, so why change a winning formula. In fact, this is the final version of the A386 available with the original “Revival” case.Įven the movement inside it more or less the same as the original version. Whether that’s the case or not, it’s a cool look for the racing chronograph – one that now, Zenith has brought it back from the dustbin of watchmaking history in an exact reproduction of the first A386.Īs with the previous Zenith revival piece ( more on that here), the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition uses blueprints to match the 1969 watch perfectly, from the 38mm stainless steel case to the pump-style pushers. Beating within it is the same movement it would have had if it was made in 1969, the venerable El Primero high-frequency automatic chronograph with column wheel. There’s a good chance the blue-shaded number was never really meant for a specific watch, that Vermont was using them to see what worked best. What makes this edition significant and even more unique is that the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition is in fact the final version of the A386 available with the original Revival case. More interestingly though, was one with the same layout in different shades of blue.

Inside it were a number of dials, including the El Primero dial that went on to define the sporty look of the 1969 icon. The story goes that among the odds and ends left by watchmaker Charles Vermont during the quartz crisis, Zenith found an unassuming box. But what about the revival of a design that never actually came to fruition? That’s the story behind Zenith’s latest re-issue, the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Edition.

We’re used to seeing archival designs come to life by now, whether it’s the re-issue of a collector’s classic or some quirky, retro-inspired throwback.
